Data on gay marriage

This article shows, that based on extensive European experience, there is less enthusiasm for marriage and more enthusiasm for divorce among homosexuals (especially lesbians) compared to straights.

And this article describes a new study which improves on the methods of previous research and finds that kids in same-sex families turn out worse as a adults than children raised in two-parent biological families (perhaps because their childhoods were less stable).

  1. The article you link itself says that the study may be better described as stability vs instability rather than gay vs straight. Hardly a definitive answer given that there's no apples to apples comparison here.

I think the article is fence-sitting. The idea that children benefit from stable rather than unstable relationships is more or less in line with the conventional wisdom, so it's understandable that the authors advance that notion, more or less as a guess.

The article does great work in debunking early pro-gay-parenting research. Not only does this correct the factual record, it also discredits the researchers who produced it. This may reduce the massive ideological bias in family- and sexuality-related research.

BTW, I was under the impression that gay marriage had been kind of a flop in Canada, that after an initial surge, gay marriage rates had fallen to far below levels for straights.

But looking at the statistics, I find this isn't true, at least for my province (British Columbia). In 2010, 20,892 resident males entered traditional marriages, and 416 entered SSMs - that's 2.0 percent. The figures for women are 20,973 and 524, or 2.5 percent.

Neither of those rates is far out of line with the presumed number of gays and lesbians in the population. Unsurprisingly, lesbians seem to get married more frequently than gays.

  4. pzed had the right idea.

The difference maker is stability vs instability. It is likely not necessarily growing up in stable vs unstable homes, but the genes for living in stable homes vs unstable ones. Previous research had found no such differences between the outcomes of children growing up with same-sex parents or opposite sex ones.

Stepfamilies in general are more unstable and result in more sexual abuse.
Every gay family is a stepfamily.

Gay families are really like a combination of step-families with 100% contraception (e.g. pleasurable sex with adopted children through IVF instead of level-headed rational reproductive sex resulting in babies). Pleasure is perhaps the worst thing that can bind a family and this is even perhaps a cause why liberal heterosexuals divorce so much - they're hedonists and godless.
