Fertility among wealthy white liberal and conservative women

The issue of fertility among wealthy conservative and liberal white women was raised at Steve Sailer's blog. I calculated the mean number of children for the two groups (ages 40-59, households making at least 100k in 1986 dollars):

Mean number of offspring

Wealthy liberal women (n = 35) 1.60
Wealthy conservative women (n = 43) 2.49

The difference is statistically significant. Wealthy white conservative women average 55 percent more kids than their liberal counterparts.

I know some liberal women who became more liberal as they got older, possibly to justify their own decisions. And some women who got more conservative as they had kids.

  2. $100k is wealthy? It'd be nice to normalize for cost of housing because in NJ, $100k is emphatically not wealthy.

Maybe sample size is too small at $200k or $300K, etc.

  4. Don't miss details, guys--that's 100k in 1986 dollars.

  5. That's roughly 200k now--and yes, sample sizes are small.

What does it look like if you expand this to $50K in 1986 dollars/$100K in 2012 dollars.

That would be a larger dataset and tell us a lot about the upper half of the middle class.

Median household income in NJ is $65,000/yr. We can quibble about where exactly the line for bring wealthy begins and if it should be based on income or assets, but if you're making 100k in NJ you're doing significantly better than most of those in your state.

There was a story online recently about a woman who was complaining about having to pick up the kids from school in a brand new Buick. If all the other mom's were driving brand new Mercedes SUV's you can see where the poor dear would feel bad about herself.

"Wealthy" is a relative term to a large extent. If you're making a million dollars per year and all the other people in your social circle are making three million, you're going to feel poor. If you're making $50k/yr and all the other people you know are making $25k, you're going to feel rich.

This is due to lifestyle choices correct? Liberal high powered career women put off children later (30s when fertility has declined) or totally forgo the charade completely, while conservative women are more likely to be full-time home makers because of religious values?
