This graph is based on data from the 2008 Monitoring the Future sample of 11,295 high school seniors. The title of the graph is not clear: it is the number of times that a student skipped a class in the past 30 days.
You can see that blacks and Hispanics are more likely to skip than whites. Black attendance is actually better than that of Latinos. And the sample is of students present the day of the survey, so it omits many who attend irregularly or who have dropped out completely. (Roughly half of Hispanics drop out). Hispanic commitment to education is clearly lower than for other groups.
In connection with the last few posts, truancy data also point to lower conscientiousness among NAMs. Or is it those nasty, hate-filled white teachers that make the kids not want to go to class?
one has to wonder how many of the hispanic seniors (males) are already working on construction sites with their uncles and dads, and reason that they dont need any more school and like the eight-to-ten bucks an hour instead.....
ReplyDeletea big un-noted story is not how hispanics have taken over the construction trades, but will be (in ten more years, fifteen at the most) how hispanics will be the contractors and the laborers on construction sites down the road.
you hardly see any black guys in construction or home improvement anymore, just whites and hispanics...
Interestingly, I knew a teacher in Mexico who complained about this same thing. She taught lower class Mexicans and said that those who paid attention and stayed in school did well but she could not convince most of them to take schooling seriously. Half of them dropped out to work or get pregnant around the age of 16, when they could get away with it. As a result, she was not optimistic about the future of Mexico.
