"You Catholic girls start much too late": Another observation from "Adventureland": Where does this stereotype of the Catholic girl who won't put out come from? It must be old. I looked at GSS numbers for single white girls 18-22.
Percent not having sex in past year (N = 459)
Protestant 25.3
Catholic 17.4
Jewish 8.3
None 15.2
Compared to Protestants, Catholic girls are putting out. Was the stereotype developed by Jewish Hollywood types who had an easier time with Jewish girls (look at their numbers)? Speaking of that, I thought Jewish women were uptight about sex. Another stereotype from frustrated Jewish men?

The Protestant-Catholic difference is actually less than one might anticipate, considering that a fair percentage of the Protestants belong to evangelical/fundamentalist denominations (SBC, LDS, AoG, etc.) that don't allow premarital sex. Catholicism frowns on it but doesn't actually prohibit it.

Blame it all on yourself cuz she's always a woman to me.
ReplyDeleteJim: Ugh, but I bet she's smart and funny.
ReplyDeleteIt's ironic that the Hibernian looking girl plays a Jewess, while the smoldering Russian Jewish girl plays a Catholic.
ReplyDeleteGuy: "Is it true what they say about Jewish women?"
ReplyDeleteGirl: "You mean 15-minute sex after two hours of foreplay?"
Guy: "I thought it was four."
Girl: "I'm only half-Jewish"
It's a bit of an overstatment, but it's nice to see someone point out that refusing to date someone because of his ethnicity (no indication the dude was religious or that her parents cared) is bigotry. I mean, isn't it?
ReplyDelete...and I get it, I really do. I decided to date only Jewish girls for my parents, and I think that's bigoted too.
ReplyDeleteThis corresponds with what I saw in Catholic High School a couple years back.
ReplyDeleteThe Protestant WASP girls tended to be pretty reserved when it came to sex, Jewish girls were known for good B^%$Jobs, and Catholic girls were known to be somewhere in between Jews and WASPs, though leaning a bit more towards the naughty side.
Italian girls in particular are always fun to be around, and not just for sex.
You guys got to hear what happens when a Jewish girl tells her parents she's dating an Italian Christian guy...Its priceless!lol

Her eyes are kind of big, and it's freaky that she looks so much like her father, but I think Alexa is well above-average.
ReplyDeleteJA - It depends on your definition of bigotry. Mine is something like a fixed, unreasoning position on a subject. But I think a practising Jew's decision not to date outside his faith might be well-reasoned. He might think, well, I shouldn't date someone I'm not willing to marry; I want to have a Jewish, religious family life; conversion might be OK, but not everyone is willing to convert (and maybe conversion for marriage is a bit dubious); so I'll avoid these problems if I only date Jewish girls.
ReplyDeleteNo bigotry here, IMO. The question is, is calling any preference to date within one's religious group "bigotry" in itself bigotry?
intellectual pariah
ah, you did say ethnicity, not religion. That makes a difference, but, still, I would say it's necessarily bigotry. If it's a matter of I won't date person X, basically because of our ethnic difference, you have presumably weighed the factors, and there's no reason to assume you've weighed them in an inflexible, unreasoning manner (my definition of bigotry). I you say, I would never date anyone of ethnicity X, that's suggests something closer to bigotry.
ReplyDeleteBlode,
ReplyDeleteAlexa Joel is lovely.
Alexa looks quite Jewish to me, a pretty gal, and she emphasizes a point Ive made over and over (but nobody listens to) about beauty and the sexes. Those oversized eyes look lovely on a woman, but effiminate-to-almost-creepy on a man.
Its amazing how a handsome brother can have a sister who resembles him be "horsefaced". Lots of "suave" men with fine bone structures may appear "beta" to most eyes, yet those same men have hot-babe daughters...........but sons who are average or "pretty-boyish". Super-masculine stud-guys oft-seem to father those "Butterface" girls with nice bods, but plain faces because the mandibles and chins are too large and the brow too potruding.
People gripe about Jews and intermarriage because Jews tend to be very pro-intermarriage when OTHER groups (whites especially) are in question, but frown on any of their own intermarrying. This is called hypocrisy. Most every group is proud of its past and ethnic identity and does not want to see it dissapear. Europeans have a LOT to be proud of, and dont want to see that vanish from the face of the earth, hence some of us are happy when we see white kids marry their own and have white children. That isn't hateful, nobody wants to dissapear.
To a creep like Jim Bowery, Alexa Joel probably looks repulsive. Glad I'm not him.
ReplyDeletePeter,
ReplyDeleteCatholicism doesn't prohibit premarital sex? LDS is a Protestant denomination?
Where are you getting your info?
Catholicism doesn't prohibit premarital sex? LDS is a Protestant denomination?
ReplyDeleteCatholicism doesn't approve of premarital sex, but a young Catholic who engages in that activity isn't going to get thrown out of the church. Not so with many of the fundamentalist groups.
LDS is Protestant in the sense that it's a Christian denomination that is neither Catholic nor Orthodox.
Peter
Catholicism doesn't approve of premarital sex, but a young Catholic who engages in that activity isn't going to get thrown out of the church.
ReplyDeleteThe RCC also doesn't expel someone for committing murder. By your logic, that means the church "doesn't actually prohibit" murder.
I think you are using a peculiarly narrow definition of "prohibit".
Examples of Protestant denominations that "throw out" people who engage in premarital sex?
ReplyDeleteLDS has its own prophet. I realize that this is a matter of debate, but to my mind, this makes Mormonism at the very least an offshoot of Christianity, if not in fact a new religion.
In order to confess, you gotta sin, ya know? When I was a young, single guy in college the girls from the local Catholic girls' college were always a fun bunch. Liked to drink, didn't put up too much resistance to the idea of a roll in the hay. Another endearing quality was that they didn't pull the "I slept with you now I own you" business...well at least not very often.

I think what differentiates the Mormons in the eyes of the Christian community has more to do with having an official Third Testament than anything else.
ReplyDeleteB.B.
LDS theology is farther from any major protestant denomination than the prods are from Catholicism. But culturally the Mormans are very protestant, like Baptists only more so.
