Extreme liberals think sociology is more scientific than economics!

Continuing the theme of the retarded liberal, GSS respondents answered questions about how scientific they thought certain disciplines were. Look at the two charts. Extreme liberals think sociology is more scientific than economics! Extreme conservatives, by contrast, know better.

I think macroeconomics and quantitative sociology are about as scientific as each other. Microeconomics is more scientific than either, non-quantitative sociology less scientific than either.

So, on balance, economics is more scientific than sociology.

In a former era of central banking, 19th century gold standard, printing money to paper over problems was sinning, losing the faith, falling off the wagon. Now quantitive easing is a primary tool. Kind of like a revolution on Easter Island where the former sins and taboos become the new tenets and fundaments.

Sociology is just packaged academic Marxism. I remember the Sociology class I had to take way back in college and the loony-tune who taught it. He cultivated an air of righteous outrage at all times, blamed Bush the Elder for everything happening on the face of the earth. I thought he was something like a bearded teenager kvetching constantly.

Like most people who are full of hate, he died of cancer about 10 years later. I remember seeing the ad notice in the local paper and thinking to myself that I wasn't a bit suprised. That guy was "mad at something" about 50% of his waking hours. He interpreted EVERYTHING through a Marxist-Lenninist lens, even completely unpolitical phenomena.

However, the "assume-a-ladder" inquiry of economics leaves very much to be desired. Gold Standard, State-run-central-bank, private-central-bank, Keynsian, Austrian, et cetera, et cetera. You cant get any two of them to agree on anything. They are politicized also, but at least usually represent a couple of differnt viewpoints as opposed to being monolithically leftist as Sociologist practically always tend to be. Here as of late, economists sure as hell have been wrong a bunch. Greenspan, Rubin, Summers, Bernake all failed to warn of what has happened. Makes you wonder about them and their supposed competence.

Your affinity for economics over sociology makes little sense. Economists promote the strongest theory against HBD. They are the ones explaining how economic circumstance causes low IQ and not the other way around. For them, economic factors are the greatest predictor of behavior.

Which economists are you thinking of? When I think of the "radical environmentalist" school of human development I usually think of English departments, though their shining star is a dead paleontologists. Some sociologists are probably among them.

Classy. Sociology is a very, very soft science. Economics too.

It's funny, because I bet when you think economics, you think Austrian economics and Austrian economics only. Because it's a religion for you, not a science.

Sciences don't have denominations.

JA: You picked the wrong conservative for the accusation of libertarian religious zeal.

Marxism has been more of a religion than the Austrian school ever was.

Radical environmentalists might be the ones claiming that there is no such thing as race and that we would never know that we were different races from other people if arbitrary social constructs did not tell us so.

Economists have nothing to say about an issue like that, but macroeconomists want to show how fiscal policy is the ultimate solution to any social problem. For them, crime, unemployment and most other major behavior patterns are the result of economic factors, which they see as the most important factors on the whole. This is the case for traditional schools of economics. Perhaps neuroeconomics will have something else to say.

BTW, inductivist and JA, please come contribute to my blog. My perspective is a little hard to peg, but I think you will like it.

You cant get any two of them to agree on anything.Economists agree on almost everything, at least the most important and basic stuff. Read a bunch of mainstream economics textbooks (Mankiw, Stiglitz, Varian etc) and you will see that they are very similar, just like physics textbooks.

Every science has big unsolved problems. What is dark matter? Is the many-worlds interpretation correct? Etc, etc.

Here as of late, economists sure as hell have been wrong a bunch. Greenspan, Rubin, Summers, Bernake all failed to warn of what has happened. So what? Economists don't have perfect information about the economy just as astronomers don't have perfect information about the universe.

When we eventually have enough details about the crisis, I'm sure that we will find that people behaved just like basic economic theory would predict (responded to incentives etc).

Economists have nothing to say about an issue like that,Economists are not supposed to have an answer to every social problem, just like chemists are not supposed to have an answer to every matter-related problem.
