Surveys that depend on self-evaluation are a poor measure of anything other than self-evaluation. (See Dunning-Kruger effect for an example of this.) It could very well be that gun owners are more aggressive and defensive and therefore less likely to recognize or admit to mental illness in themselves. To put it more impartially, gun owners may be less likely to conceptualize mental/emotional patterns in themselves as mental illness than non-gun owners.
