Hispanics are soft on crime: Continuing the theme of the liberalism of Hispanics, I wondered how they feel about the criminal justice system. Looking at GSS data, I've listed the percent who: 1) think that there are occasions when it is okay for a police officer to hit a suspect, and 2) think the courts are too harsh on criminals.
Percent who think that there are occasions when it is okay for a police officer to hit a suspect (N = 23,320)
English/Welsh 82.9
Irish 80.3
German 79.4
All Americans 73.1
American Indian 71.9
Black 53.4
Mexican 48.1
Percent who think the courts are too harsh on criminals (N = 34,606)
Blacks 13.9
Mexican 12.2
American Indian 6.8
All Americans 5.5
Irish 4.4
Italian 4.0
English/Welsh 3.4
German 3.2
As you can see, Mexican Americans resemble blacks in their toughness on criminals. Real conservatives, just like Tamar Jacoby tells us. Real law and order types.

Some anti-gun people think owning a gun is a sign of some kind of mental abnormality. According to General Social Survey data, gun owners ...

JA - Are you familiar with Alan Dershowitz? I am sure you are...he's the big criminal/civil rights advocate who admitted about 10 years ago that 95% of the people who are arrested and charged with a crime actually did what they were accused of.
ReplyDeleteI can understand that people who get arrested, beaten up, or just plain given a hard time by the cops don't like it. But skinny white guys who tweak and have to steal to support their habit get "profiled" and hassled by the cops too.
Life can be unpleasant if you're poor, stupid, impulsive, and prone to doing stuff that's illegal. That's why you have to be more careful if any or all of the above attributes describe you.
I'm as skinny and white as they come, and I was pulled over and searched in my college days while driving through Georgia for no other reason than having a Phish sticker on my car. Everyone gets profiled.
ReplyDelete"Everyone gets profiled."
ReplyDeleteI live in Jersey City and often drive through Newark as a shortcut. I've been pulled over a few times. I'm white.
As for all those blacks and liberals bitching about how unfair or raysist the justice system is or about how there are too many brothers in jail, maybe people shouldn't do shit that lands them there.
PS the Congressional Black Congress was a group that pushed for tougher crack cocaine sentencing...And now blacks complain. Maybe they should write their elected representative...
I'm as skinny and white as they come, and I was pulled over and searched in my college days while driving through Georgia for no other reason than having a Phish sticker on my car. Everyone gets profiled.I bet "skinny white people with phish stickers" would give the same answers to those questions as blacks and Hispanics.
ReplyDeleteJA,
ReplyDeleteI can't speak for skinny white people with Phish stickers regarding those questions anymore since that was six years ago and I removed the sticker right after the incident occurred. I would argue, though, that this goes against your assertion that the average white student pot smoker is indifferent to the treatment of criminal suspects. If they are part of a subgroup that has a higher rate of criminality, the law enforcement authorities will monitor them more closely since...the subgroup has a higher rate of criminality.
