Data from the World Values Survey (2008) makes me nervous. Ninety-three percent of Egyptians say they are religious. Fifty-six percent attend religious services at least once a week. And the gender difference is huge, but not like you might expect: 87 percent of men but only 23 percent of women attend at least weekly (sample size = 3,039).

ReplyDeleteMosques are gender segregated. Men in front. Women and children in the back. Probably started as a practical matter just so they could hear and not be distracted.
ReplyDeleteIn our rights oriented culture, we forget that religion and preaching was about responsibility and duty not personal fulfillment. So, obviously they were talking to the men.
Churches/Synagogues used to have segregated seating. Honestly, if the women still had to sit in the back with the kids, do you think they would go?
I have been to many Islam dominated countries and I am not going to be surprised with the survey because of the segregation of the gender. I agree with the previous post. Women are obviously lesser because they rather stay at their houses to tend their kids.
