Mexican Americans and social conservatism: Let me follow-up the last analysis by linking to a recent post by Razib. Using General Social Survey data, he shows that, while blacks are less in favor of gay marriage than whites, Mexican Americans are not.

Social conservatives who think we can win future battles by importing loads of Mexican immigrants are wrong. (I'll concede that it's not an argument I see many social conservatives making). Mexicans who come to this country tend to absorb liberal social values. I showed in a previous analysis that Mexican immigrants are a somewhat less in favor of abortion than whites, but the gap basically disappears within a generation. As Steve Sailer has written, behaviorally they assimilate more toward the black mean than the white one, and the white mean ain't so hot. Anyone who claims that this group is giving America a traditionalist shot in the arm is ignorant of the facts. Unless he means treating one's wife like crap.

I am very well acquainted with Latin American culture, having once been married to a woman from Central America, and having spent over 20 years traveling and doing business there.

Although it varies from country to country, some generalizations can be made:

    - Although the people from the countryside tend to be religious (I would characterize it as more of a superstitious spirituality, actually), the city folk, although nominally Catholic, are if anything less religious than Americans.

    - Abortion is not considered a big deal. It's widely available (except perhaps for Chile, although that could be changing) and is viewed as a private matter.

    - Prostitution is also pretty much out in the open, and an accepted practice. Strangely enough, pornography is frowned on.

    - Being gay is still something one needs to be discreet about, but once again attitudes are changing, and actually pretty quickly.

    - I never have given it much attention, but I don't think you find much support for gun owners' rights in these places. If I were in charge of the NRA, I would view immigration as a backdoor way of ginning up support for gun control.

    - The political culture is based on patronage & corruption, and you vote for a particular party or candidate with the expectation that goodies will flow your way.

So in all I would say that anyone expecting large scale immigration from points south to move the country to the right, culturally and politically speaking, is going to be mighty disappointed.
