ReplyDeleteI've often wondered if our disgust for same sex isn't hardwired into us. Porn for straight men uses women-on-women touching to appeal to a guy's fantasies of having more than one woman at a time, but the actual non-fantasy brand of lesbian sex, that is, two real lesbians, not porn actresses, both of whom or at least one who is/are pretty butch would turn off the average straight guy.
Supposedly Bailey and his crew have been researching what it is in particular about women that gay guys find to be a turn off. I don't why he thinks that will lead to much info.
In case you're interested here are some good links. The number of studies of rats, mice, sheep the last few years make me wonder if it won't be that much longer before we understand the neurological underpinings of sexual attractions in humans.
ReplyDeleteOut just recently--I haven't read Marc Breedlove's latest yet since it's only available to subscribers, but seems he and his team may on the trail of solving the confusion over how estrogen and androgen receptors masculinize the brain. (in the mouse, anyway) Seems they've come up with a model that describes the roles of the estrogen receptor in masculine fetal development and the post-natal contributions of androgen receptors in full masculinization of the male brain in the mouse:

Of course, it's Charles Roselli's work with sheep that offers the best model for studying human sexuality as 60% of domestic rams are attracted to ewes while the remainder are either attracted to other rams or are entirely asexual. Obviously, something is going on there. You may be familiar with his work, but if not, here's his ram model:

Key lines at the end of paragraph 1:
"These results fail to support an essential role for neural aromatase in the sexual differentiation of sheep brain and behaviour. Thus, we propose that oSDN morphology and male-typical partner preferences may instead be programmed through an androgen receptor mechanism not involving aromatisation."
Previous to this, Roselli and his team spent a lot of time testing the aromatisation hypothesis. Maybe Breedlove's latest and that fact that Roselli is now looking at androgen receptors more closely in the ram will lead to something.
