I had a family studies professor who informed us students that Democrats are the people who care about others.
The GSS asked respondents how often they visit their mother (sample size = 355). I calculated the percent who visit at least monthly. The estimate is 72 percent for whites who voted for Bush in 2000. It is 63 percent for whites who voted for Gore or Nader. Among women, the respective figures are 74 and 62 percent.

I suspect that Republicans live closer to Mom.
ReplyDeleteIf that's true (I have no reason to think so) it might be an indication of putting a priority on family.
ReplyDeleteNot surprising. I would expect liberals to be more oriented outside the family and conservatives to be more oriented inside the family.
ReplyDeleteThe question is whether the professor's comment is correct if you specify "others" to mean "individuals outside one's family" (understood that the distinction probably didn't occur to the professor, who was in the process of viewing his or her own ideology in a positive light).
You may be right, Ron, but it may be an indication of Democrats needing to move to big cities for work. Most highly-educated people are Democrats, and most high-education jobs are in big cities. White Republicans don't need to move as far away from home because they don't attain the education levels of White Dems.
