Is IQ correlated with skin tone among blacks? The General Social Survey gave 437 blacks an IQ test (10 vocabulary words) and interviewers also recorded how dark their skin was from "very dark brown" to "very light brown." Here are the means:

Mean IQ by darkness of skin

Very dark brown 86.99
Dark brown 84.05
Medium brown 90.38
Light brown 92.77
Very light brown 90.99
All blacks 88.91

You might wonder why the mean is not 85 for all blacks--the black-white gap is not as large for verbal ability. Also--due to small samples, the only significant differences at the 95% level are medium and light over dark.

Dark and light browns are almost 9 points apart, a gap more than large enough to produce classes among blacks based on skin color. (Or the color-based classes produced the IQ gap?)

I don't know about intelligence, but it seems that conservative blacks tend to be dark-skinned. I'm thinking Clarence Thomas, Sowell, Keyes, principal Joe Carter, I'm sure there are others. Some of the most liberal seem to be more light-skinned. Not sure why this is - but I'd be more than happy to be refuted by anyone more willing to spend time researching this

Ziel,

1 = darkest, 5 = lightest:

[PARTYID]
STRONG DEMOCRAT 2.71
NOT STR DEMOCRAT 2.77
IND,NEAR DEM 2.93
INDEPENDENT 2.83
IND,NEAR REP 2.69
NOT STR REPUBLICAN 2.17
STRONG REPUBLICAN 2.75

[POLVIEWS]
EXTREMELY LIBERAL 2.61
LIBERAL 2.77
SLIGHTLY LIBERAL 2.76
MODERATE 2.77
SLGHTLY CONSERVATIVE 2.59
CONSERVATIVE 2.83
EXTRMLY CONSERVATIVE 2.67

Excluding independent and other party, there is a -0.8 correlation between COLOR-PARTYID and -0.1 between COLOR-POLVIEWS. (light color is slightly more associated with conviction, so both get a little lighter towards the 'extremes'. Leftwing blacks are somewhat smarter: WORDSUM-PARTYID -.02 and WORDSUM-POLVIEWS -.9. Blacks get a little smarter as they move from the extremes to the slightlys)

Skin lightness and IQ is .16 for blacks

Reminds me of the old episode of SNL (1977, I believe it was) where Julian Bond is a guest on "Black Perspective" hosted by Garrett Morris. Bond asserts that "everybody knows that light skinned blacks are nore intelligent" than darker-skinned blacks. Morris reacts with incredulity, and Bond says "everyone knows this. I'm surprised you haven't heard this before." Of course, such a skit would never make it onto TV today.

Enough of all this IQ nonsense. Don't the people who put out the GSS know that IQ is meaningless as proven by Stephen Jay Gould? When are they going to ask some more interesting questions?

I have a few questions they should start asking on the next GSS:

1. True or false: Einstein is the greatest living scientist.
2. True or false: Emma Lazarus wrote the American Constitution.
3. True or false: A ton of feathers weighs less than a ton of bricks.
4. True or false: Our galaxy, the Milky Way, is named after a candy bar.
5. True or false: Physicists have split the photon.
6. True or false: Spain is a Latin American country.
7. True or false: The Revolutionary War was fought primarily between the United States and France.
8. True or false: The capital of the United States is New York City.
9. True or false: The national language of Denmark is Dutch.
10. True or false: The sun revolves around the moon.
11. True or false: The native language of Socrates and all Greeks of his day is called "Latin."
12. The headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense is called "The Pentagram."

Sowell and some other conservative blacks, perhaps including Justice Thomas, were discriminated against by the lighter skinned black establishment, so that can contribute to dissenting views.
