Homosexual voting over the past three decades

Have homosexuals moved left over time? According to the GSS, it looks like they have.  Shown below are the percent (of all gay men, bisexuals, and lesbians) who voted for the Democrat in the presidential election:

Percent who voted for the Democrat

Obama 88
Kerry 73
Gore 66
Clinton 75
Clinton 62
Dukakis 63
Mondale 57

The Democrat share rose from 57 percent in 1984 to 88 percent in 2008. It looks like the culture war may have pushed non-heteros to the left (although they started this period somewhat to the left anyway) .

shouldn't this reflect hetero voting, too. i.e. what was Mondale's total percent? (really low, no?) 57% may still be a huge Dem skew.

  2. Wonder what's with the Gore dip--low overall numbers, or maybe he just wasn't fabulous enough? ;)

  3. Should be interpreted along with Razib's chart. Conservatives are more sympathetic towards gays than ever, it's just that liberals are moving towards those norms at a much faster clip.

Razib's chart suggests that AIDS convinced even some liberals that homosexuality was bad. But then, when a cure was found, their new-found access to the media enabled them to argue for equality.
