Sex and bad vision
Looking at ADD Health data, I see that 36.9 percent of young males wear eyeglasses, contacts or both. The number for young females is 53.4 percent. The difference is statistically significant. The pattern is the same for all races. Since this is an adolescent/young adult sample, I assumed the sex difference is due to the earlier maturation of girls, but the gap is just as big for those in their mid-20s. How do we explain this? Male stubbornness? Male hunting/warfare?

There is probably data showing eye test results by gender. If they are mandatory tests for driving or school, you might get a valid sample and prove or disprove it.
ReplyDeleteIf it turns out that men have better vision, another test would be to see how differing testosterone levels affect vision.
It could be that long hours of reading alter your vision over time. Perhaps women read more as children than do men?
ReplyDeleteMale stubbornness. I should wear glasses in my daily life, but I don't. I only wear them for driving.
ReplyDeleteVision is related to use of the eyes. If you get outside more, it helps avoid nearsightedness. If you are in front of books
ReplyDeleteWhere I work in patent law, vision correction rates are nearly 100% because almost everyone has had a lifetime of bookishness and computer-screenishness.
Correction: If you are in front of books all the time your vision will generally be nearsighted, regardless of suggestions that reading doesn't harm the eyes.
ReplyDeleteI am not convinced nearsightedness is all bad... it seems good for focusing on near things.
How do we explain the high rate of bad vision in the first place? 45 % is very high.
ReplyDeleteI can remember that just a generation ago, it was lower. How much bad sight has increased over the years should be a good research topic.
I think that this is impossible, how can be sex dangerous for vision?...
