Ignore your sociology professor

College girls are routinely instructed by social science professors that wife beating is a very common phenomenon, and when it comes to violence, the home is one of the most dangerous places for a woman. The not-so-subtle message is that a woman should think twice before getting married. The only problem with this advice is that, compared to the never-married, married females face only a fraction of the risk of being assaulted. According to the General Social Survey, 5 percent of never-married women were attacked in the past year. That's 5 times the risk that married women have. Marriage does not lead to violence; it protects against it. You know this if you follow common sense. You don't know this if you listen to your sociology professor.

Don't we need to aggregate "Married" with "Widowed", "Divorced" and "Separated" to make the relevant comparison to "Never Married"?

  5. I meant a source for the claim that "ollege girls are routinely instructed by social science professors that wife beating is a very common phenomenon." I know marriage is good for people.

Tomorrow is apparently "Women's Equality Day," marking the anniversary of women gaining suffrage. Someone remarked today that he thought it was ironic that if you acronymize "Women's Equality Day," you spell out WED, suggesting, of course, that marriage is inimical to female equality.

What an idiotic thing to say. Monogamous judeo-christian marriage probably did more to make women equal than anything else before or since.

As far as I can tell, the GSS question deals with all types of attacks, not just ones in a domestic context.

It's not hard to think of reasons why never-married women might be more prone than married women to non-domestic attacks. They're more likely to live in low-income, high-crime areas, for one. You'd really have to control for income and education to draw any definitive conclusions as to the effects of marriage.

In addition, women who live with men without being married might be at extra risk of domestic attack. Can that be determined from GSS data?

  9. ja: That statement is based on my many years of taking and teaching social science classes. Take any random gender, criminology, victimology, or family sociology text, and you'll find those kind of statements. They will not say that you shouldn't get married, but they will imply that the institution is dangerous for women.

Because a dangerously high proportion of Jews think attacking and undermining white society is 'Good for Jews'. Ron isn't one of the bad guys directly, but he's part of the Jewish problem because he won't admit the phenomenon of Jewish subversion exists or help with efforts to end it.

Ummm, no. It actually did more to make men more equal, because more men were guaranteed to be able to get sex that way, which keeps them from being so angry and ganging together and taking property away from the big guys.

I'm a sociology professor who has never said that marriage is a dangerous institution for women. What we know is that, compared to men, women who are subjected to assault are more likely to be victimized by people they know. Compared to women, on the other hand, men run a higher risk of being assaulted by a stranger.
On the other hand, we know that married women are more likely to suffer from depression compared to unmarried women. Married men, however, tend to have better mental health than single men.
