God as chastity belt: I saw a Google ad on this blog asking if you want atheist women. That made me wonder, for some odd reason, if atheist women put out more than others.

The General Social Survey asked 4,423 women about the total number of sexual partners they have had in the past 5 years, as well as asking them about belief in God. Here are the means (it's actually an index: for example, someone with more than 100 partners--the highest category--is scored an 8):

Mean index of sex partners

Doesn't believe in God 1.94
No way to find out 1.76
There is some higher power 1.78
Believes sometimes 1.57
Believes but doubts 1.55
Knows God exists 1.27

The pattern is clear. Atheist women have the most sex partners, so guys, it pays to cruise for chicks at Humanist Society commitment ceremonies. Females with full confidence in a God being out there have a significantly lower average than the other groups. In the old days they strapped a chastity belt on a girl. Now, God must use like a force field over the area.

My daughter gets the fear of God put into her on a daily basis, thank you.

It could well be that the more religious women are the most likely to be married, and hence with only one partner. It would be interesting to see if the less religious/more sex pattern exists among single women as well.

Less likely does not mean unlikely, and in my experience sex is better with religious women - probably because there's more emotional complexity around it for them, or maybe the Song of Songs provides a better erotic education than your average secular hard or soft porn video.

I worry about the accuracy of these types of comparison.

Presumably those who are sexually repressed by religion are highly likely to minimise what they secretly get up to?

The example comes to mind of the rabidly anti-homosexual public figures who are ultimately arrested in a public toilet. I'm almost certain that in any survey they would put hand on heart and swear to their god that they don't play around. On the other hand, someone who is atheistic/agnostic might be more relaxed with their sexuality would be more likely to tell the truth.

Stephen, you are absolutely correct! All these hand-over-hearts believers are most likely to lie about their sexual proclivities. The example of recent cases of conservative/religious public figures getting caught with their hands in the cookie jar (or down someone's pants) seems to prove this. Also, in conservative culture, women are explicitly denounced for being openly sexual or confortable with sexuality. Therefore these women are more likely to fudge the numbers methinks.
