Sixteen percent of female veterans are lesbian: Folks with their eyes open can see that gay men are more feminine than straight guys, while lesbians are more masculine than hetero women. Don't believe me? Well, let's test the hypothesis with the military. I bet that the percentage of female veterans who are lesbian is higher than the share of male veterans who are gay. The General Social Survey asked 3,644 Americans about the gender of their sex partners, and if they have served in the military. Here are the percentages who are gay and straight (warning: samples sizes are low for homosexual men and lesbians):
Percent who are homosexual
Male veterans 1.5
Male non-veterans 3.2
Female veterans 15.6
Female non-veterans 0.9
See? I told you so.

3.2% of male non-vets admitted to being gay?
ReplyDeleteThat's bigger than I thought. If so, maybe it really is true that 5% of US men have been beaten into submission.
It is completely true that women in the military are discriminated far more than men. Women comprise of about 15% of the military, and 30% of discharged under Don't Ask, Don't Tell happen to be female.
ReplyDeleteThats sad.
But I would question what you've written. Saying that gay men are more feminine than straight men is discrimination-however slight. That would be the same as saying that all lesbians are truck-driving and butch.
Don't help to further the misguided misconceptions.

Saying that people tend to be one way doesn't mean they're all that way. Saying men are taller than women doesn't mean there are no women who are taller than men--look at Gabrielle Reece and Gary Coleman.

ReplyDeleteNaaah, from what I recall the estimates of homosexuality are 4% male, 2% female. That doesn't sound too far off.
I have a female relative who was in the WACS in WWII. She kept being shifted from post to post in some job connected with "fitness to serve". She finally figured out that she was the designated person to discover and have discharged lesbians.
ReplyDeleteI doubt that there was such a person for gay males, because I think that if there was, we would know it. But I actually don't know that. Does anyone else?
It would be interesting to study the response of lesbians to threatening situations to see if their response is male typical or female typical or in between.
ReplyDeleteTestosterone levels would be interesting as well.

ReplyDeleteJason, I don't see any evidence for this.
If 15 percent of soldiers etc. are female, and 15.6 percent of those are lesbian, and 1.5 percent of male soldiers etc. are gay, then for every 1000 members of the Armed Forces you'd expect about 23 lesbians and 13 gay males.
So if lesbians and gay males were being expelled at the same rate, you'd expect 65 percent of the expelled to be female and 35 percent male. Instead, it's almost the other way around. The bias is the other way around. Whether this is due to prejudice or something else is another question.
