When GSS creates sampling units, they give weight proportionate to population size, so urban populations--where Jews are concentrated--are not underrepresented. For example, NYC is divided into 5 primary sampling units, and there are only around 100 units for the entire country. They conduct face-to-face interviews at the respondent's home, so those with unlisted numbers will not be underrepresented.(I don't know about gaining access to buildings with locked front doors). Bottom line, 2.1% of respondents are Jewish--this sounds about right. The GSS matches the Census closely on demographic ditributions.Ron Guhnamehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06421460508647618774noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26188478.post-1148851732635030782006-05-28T14:28:00.000-07:002006-05-28T14:28:00.000-07:00Anonymous: I compared the average number of childr...Anonymous: I compared the average number of children between Jewish couples and mixed couples, and it was 2.2 and 2.3, respectively.Ron Guhnamehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06421460508647618774noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26188478.post-1148831569597212902006-05-28T08:52:00.000-07:002006-05-28T08:52:00.000-07:00A sample of only about 28? Pretty small unless the effect is overwhelming, as it seems to be in this case.

How randomly selected are the GSS samples? That's critical. Especially with a jewish sample. They often, for good reason, have unlisted numbers, etc.

I know I should go to the GSS website and check these details for myself, but hope you'll be indulgent.RobertHumehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03913525250329418444noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26188478.post-1148747419049780452006-05-27T09:30:00.000-07:002006-05-27T09:30:00.000-07:00Number of offspring vs. Percentage of Intermarriag...Number of offspring vs. Percentage of Intermarriage. If the number of offspring of intermarried couples is lower than the number of offspring of jewish marriages, then the effects of intermarriage on jewish group continuity are diminished. Am I to conclude that marriages with both parents jewish are more fertile than marriages where only one parent is jewish?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
